Computational Biologist - Associated Principal Scientist (m/f)


Boehringer Ingelheim Regional Center Vienna is home to Boehringer Ingelheim’s dedicated drug discovery center for innovative cancer medicines. A team of more than 250 scientists, combining their expertise in cancer immunology and cancer biology, as well as genomics, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, structural biology, screening and pharmacokinetics, drive our efforts to identify novel medicines for the treatment of cancer.
In the Cancer Immunology Department, we are currently looking for a highly motivated, self-driven, and result oriented scientist (m/f) with a strong background in Computational Biology and expertise in the field of oncology/cancer immunology. Experience in academic-industrial collaborations as well as in partnerships with CROs is preferred, ideally in the field of single cell sequencing and expression profile/signature analysis of tumor tissue.

The Associated Principal Scientist in the Human Cancer Immunology department within Cancer Immunology will act as a key interface between local and global Computational Biology groups as well as the external academic community. Duties & Responsibilities

  • Being an advocate of computational biology for projects of experimental researchers in the realm of immune oncology/human cancer immunology
  • Analyzing large-scale internal and external gene expression sets by applying standard expression sequencing pipelines
  • Maintaining close relationships with BI experimental researchers and external collaborators for data interpretation, data presentation
  • Generate data-driven biological hypotheses that can be tested experimentally


Personal and scientific requirements:

  • Excellent communication skills in English and, preferably, in German
  • Ability to communicate and work in an interdisciplinary team environment
  • Spirit in providing bioinformatics services to bioinformatics and non-bioinformatics stakeholders
  • Commitment to generate biological impact and actionable results using bioinformatics
  • Previous experience in bioinformatics for human cancer immunology/immune oncology is preferable

Technical requirements:

  • Experience in handling, analyzing, and annotating next-generation sequencing data sets
  • Ability to process complex and large data sets, desirable in high-performance cluster environments (e.g. HPC, cloud computing)
  • Solid programming/software development skills
  • Solid experience in the statistical programming language R and Bioconductor
  • Scientific publication record in applied bioinformatics
  • Experience in another scripting language (e.g. Python)
  • Experience using the Linux shell and utilities (e.g. bash)

We offer an attractive salary package in line with your qualification, experience and individual competencies. The base pay is composed of a market oriented excess payment and the respective amount according to the Austrian collective agreement (at least € 60,000 gross per year/full-time).
